The Great Lisbon Earthquake

On All Saints’ Day morning, Lisbon’s churches were full — and then the ground failed.

  • When: 1 November 1755 (Dia de Todos os Santos)
  • Where: Lisboa — felt across Portugal and far beyond
  • What: a huge earthquake, then fires, then a deadly wave from the Tejo / Atlantic
  • Scale: one of Europe’s worst natural disasters; the Baixa was devastated
  • After: Pombaline rebuilding reshaped the city; the shock reached European philosophy

In minutes, stone, fire, and water remade a capital. Thousands died. Portugal would rebuild Lisbon on a new plan — and never forget that morning.

The comic that follows is an artistic interpretation. It follows two fictional survivors; Gaivota watches.

3. Cultural note

The 1755 disaster is still part of Lisbon’s identity: the rebuilt Baixa grid, open squares, and earthquake-aware architecture. Philosophers across Europe argued about nature, God, and reason after the quake — so the event is both Portuguese history and a European idea.
