Ellinomatheia A2 or B1 for Cyprus Citizenship (2026)

September 11, 2026
Updated September 11, 2026

Three different questions are often collapsed into one search: which Ellinomatheia level matches your present Greek, which language evidence your citizenship route requires, and where you can register in Cyprus. They must be answered separately. Ellinomatheia A2 is a recognised certificate of elementary Greek ability, but recognition of the certificate does not mean that A2 satisfies every immigration or naturalisation threshold. For the standard M127 route, the important distinction is that the official language benchmark is generally B1.

Prep2Go's Ellinomatheia materials on this site focus on A2 preparation. They can help you develop A2 vocabulary, understand the level and preview question styles, but they are not a substitute for B1 preparation or legal eligibility advice. The mock landing page provides a format walkthrough and preview; it should not be interpreted as a free, official or fully timed KEG examination. Once you have confirmed the level you need, our registration guide explains the practical booking process and the need to check the current examination notice.

Two questions: which exam, which citizenship route?

Choosing an Ellinomatheia level is a language-certification decision. The Centre for the Greek Language, commonly abbreviated as KEG from its Greek name, offers certification across CEFR levels. Choosing the evidence for a citizenship application is a legal and administrative decision governed by the route under which you apply. A person may appropriately sit A2 for work, personal progress or integration while still needing B1 later for standard naturalisation. Conversely, someone who already has qualifying Greek-medium education may need to rely on the documentary rules stated by the Ministry of Interior rather than sit a new examination.

Standard M127 residence route: B1 Greek

The standard Form M127 route is naturalisation due to years of residence. According to the Ministry of Interior's official M127 guidance, an applicant must satisfy more than a language test. The listed framework includes the relevant legal-residence periods, continuous residence immediately before applying subject to the official absence rule, good character, suitable accommodation, stable and regular financial resources, and an intention to continue residing in the Republic. The applicant must also provide the required evidence of Greek and pass the separate examination concerning the contemporary political and social reality of Cyprus. Read the current official page as a complete checklist because passing B1 does not cure a residence or documentation problem.

For the ordinary route, the language level to remember is B1, not A2. The Ministry's published guidance identifies accepted ways to prove the required competence, including relevant Greek-language certifications. Ellinomatheia B1 obtained through the KEG system is one possible form of evidence, while the University of Cyprus School of Modern Greek is also referenced in the official framework. The precise documents accepted with your filing should be checked against the version of the M127 instructions in force when you apply. An Ellinomatheia A2 certificate by itself should not be presented as meeting the standard-route B1 requirement.

Political and social reality examination

The Cyprus political and social reality examination is separate from Ellinomatheia. It assesses the subject matter specified by the competent Cyprus authority; it is not another name for the Ellinomatheia reading, listening, writing or speaking papers. The M127 page states the result required for the relevant naturalisation route, while MoESY publishes the operational information for its examination. Use the current official syllabus, candidate notice and result rules rather than assuming that general Greek-language study covers the required content. You may therefore need two parallel plans: one for B1 Greek and another for the Cyprus examination. Our article on Ellinomatheia structure concerns the language examination only.

High-skilled employment route: when A2 may matter

The official M127 guidance also describes differentiated provisions for certain highly skilled employees of companies that fall within the applicable Council of Ministers framework. On this route, A2 and B1 are both relevant, and the higher B1 level is associated with a shorter residence pathway than A2. This is the principal reason search results sometimes say that A2 is enough for Cyprus citizenship. That statement is incomplete: A2 is not a universal replacement for B1. The applicant must first fall within the qualifying employment and company category, satisfy the specified employment and residence conditions, meet the continuous-residence rule, and complete the other naturalisation requirements. Ask your employer to confirm its category, then verify the position through the official M127 material and qualified advice before relying on A2.

Where Ellinomatheia and centre 35703 fit

Ellinomatheia is the Certificate of Attainment in Greek administered through the Centre for the Greek Language. Candidates register for a particular CEFR level and sit the examination through an authorised examination centre. For the Cyprus MoESY option discussed in this guide cluster, use centre code 35703 when that centre is shown for the relevant cycle, but always verify the code, available levels, registration window and candidate instructions before submitting payment. Our registration guide covers the workflow. For the certification system itself, consult the official KEG certification portal. Neither Prep2Go nor a citizenship adviser controls KEG registration, centre availability or examination results.

What A2 is still useful for

A2 remains a meaningful language milestone. It can document elementary practical ability, strengthen everyday communication and provide a structured bridge toward B1. It may also be relevant if you are confirmed as eligible for the differentiated highly skilled route. If your immediate goal is A2, use our vocabulary guide to compare study methods and the Anki deck for purchasable A2-focused deck content. The product is study content designed for use with Anki; it does not include or sell the Anki application itself. The mock preview helps you inspect the format and preparation approach, but it is not an official KEG paper and should not be described as a free full-length timed mock. Standard M127 applicants should treat A2 as a stepping stone and make a separate B1 plan.

M127 charges versus Ellinomatheia examination fees

Keep the citizenship process and the language examination in separate budget lines. Charges, stamps or processing options associated with a naturalisation application are published by the competent Cyprus authority and are not the fee for sitting Ellinomatheia. Examination fees are published for the applicable registration cycle and may differ by level or centre arrangements. Because these amounts and procedures can change, this guide does not quote a future fee as guaranteed. Check the current M127 page for application-related amounts and the current MoESY or KEG registration notice for examination costs before paying.

Residence pattern: language is only one requirement

The M127 assessment does not begin and end with your certificate. The standard route examines cumulative legal residence over the period defined in the law and continuous legal residence during the period immediately before the application, subject to the official treatment of permitted absences. The differentiated highly skilled provisions use their own stated conditions. In either case, a language certificate cannot compensate for insufficient residence, an ineligible employment category or missing evidence. Use the Ministry of Interior wording when calculating the relevant periods; casual phrases such as “I have lived in Cyprus for several years” may not capture permit gaps, absences or the exact legal calculation.

Maintain a residence record well before filing. Useful working records include permit issue and expiry dates, renewal receipts, entry and exit dates, travel evidence, addresses, employment periods and tax or social-insurance documents where relevant. A personal spreadsheet is not official proof, but it can help you and an adviser identify discrepancies early. Compare it with official records rather than reconstructing years of travel from memory shortly before an application.

Exemptions and alternative educational evidence

The official M127 guidance recognises specified educational evidence as an alternative to presenting a separate language certificate in appropriate cases. This can include qualifying study completed in Greek, subject to the exact conditions and documents requested by the authority. Do not infer an exemption merely because a school offered some lessons in Greek or because a university programme included a Greek module. Compare the institution, language of instruction, qualification and documentary evidence with the current official wording. A language-evidence exemption also does not automatically remove the separate Cyprus political and social reality requirement or the remaining naturalisation conditions.

A practical preparation ladder from A2 to B1

If you currently perform at A2 but the standard M127 route is your eventual goal, use A2 as a foundation rather than treating it as the final legal threshold. Start with high-frequency vocabulary, short functional texts, routine listening and controlled speaking. Then move toward the wider range, connected expression and comprehension expected at B1. The Ellinomatheia A2 hub and guide hub organise Prep2Go's A2 material. The practice exam chooser can help you navigate available exam-preparation categories, but it does not decide which certificate a government authority will accept.

Build your timetable backward from official opportunities rather than adopting a generic multi-year promise. First, confirm your likely citizenship route and current language level. Second, check the KEG registration cycle and whether centre 35703 offers your selected level. Third, leave enough time for targeted study, the examination, publication of results and collection of any required certificate evidence. Prepare separately for the Cyprus political and social reality examination using official material. Finally, assemble the broader M127 dossier only after checking that the residence calculation and supporting documents align with the route you intend to use.

Be cautious with social-media claims that citizenship follows automatically after a simple number of years. Naturalisation is an application assessed against statutory conditions, not an automatic reward for reaching an anniversary. Cyprus amended this framework in December 2023, and later administrative guidance may clarify how documents and examinations are handled. Use current official instructions rather than an old forum post, a screenshot without context or a preparation provider's sales page.

If you already hold another nationality, investigate that country's rules separately. Cyprus naturalisation requirements do not determine whether your present country permits dual nationality, requires notification or applies loss-of-nationality rules. That is a second legal question for the relevant authority or adviser.

For the reality examination, prioritise the syllabus and candidate information issued by MoESY or another competent authority for the relevant sitting. General knowledge about Cyprus can be helpful, but it is not a reliable substitute for the published scope. Likewise, an Ellinomatheia vocabulary list is not a reality-exam syllabus.

A qualified lawyer or regulated migration professional can apply the rules to your permits, absences, family circumstances and employment history. Prep2Go provides language-preparation content and editorial summaries of public sources. It does not assess citizenship eligibility, calculate official residence or submit M127 applications.

If you are comparing Ellinomatheia B1 with a B1 examination offered through the University of Cyprus School of Modern Greek, begin with the evidence listed by the Ministry of Interior. Then compare official schedules, registration rules, assessment formats and result availability. Do not choose solely on the basis of an unofficial claim that one examination is easier.

Do not assume an unpublished expiry period for an Ellinomatheia certificate. Instead, retain the original certificate and result documentation, and check whether the current M127 filing instructions request a particular issue date, copy format, authentication step or additional confirmation. The receiving authority's documentary requirements control.

This guide addresses Form M127 naturalisation by years of residence. Citizenship connected with marriage, descent, birth, adoption or another statutory basis can involve different forms and evidence. Do not transfer the B1 and residence summary in this article to a different route without checking that route's official instructions.

The English-language gov.cy page is useful for planning, but applications remain governed by Cyprus law and the competent authority's current requirements. If wording, translations or calculations appear inconsistent, obtain clarification before acting on the interpretation that is most convenient.

Treat language results and reality-examination results as independent evidence. Passing one does not imply that you have passed the other, and retake procedures may differ. Read the official rules for each examination before assuming that a result, registration or payment can be transferred to another sitting.

Permanent residence, long-term residence, employment permission and citizenship are distinct statuses. Greek-language evidence can appear in more than one administrative context, but the requested level and accepted proof may differ. Always identify the authority, form and legal route attached to a language request.

Your M127 dossier may contain civil, employment, accommodation and financial documents in addition to examination evidence. Follow the official rules for originals, certified copies and translations. Do not assume that every document issued abroad can be uploaded or submitted without certification simply because your language certificate is already in Greek.

Sitting A2 before B1 can be a sensible learning strategy when it provides structure and realistic feedback. It also means budgeting for separate registrations and preparing for two levels. Use the fees and deadlines published for each actual examination cycle rather than extrapolating from a previous year's notice.

Naturalisation planning is a document-management project as well as a language goal. Residence records, permits, employment evidence, travel history, reality-examination results and language evidence can develop on different timelines. Ellinomatheia A2 may mark genuine progress and may have a role in the differentiated highly skilled framework, but the ordinary M127 route should be planned around B1 unless the official rules or case-specific advice establish another accepted basis.

Create two checklists. The study checklist can contain vocabulary themes, listening practice, writing corrections, speaking sessions and mock-format review. The citizenship checklist should contain legal residence dates, absences, permits, employment documents, examination evidence and official form requirements. Keeping them separate reduces the risk of mistaking exam readiness for application readiness.

Highly skilled employees should not rely only on a job title such as engineer, developer or manager. The differentiated route depends on the legal framework described by the Ministry, including whether the employing company and employment relationship fall within it. Obtain documentary confirmation and check the current M127 conditions before selecting A2 as your final language target.

This article does not discuss discontinued investment schemes or suggest that purchasing a product, property or examination place creates a right to citizenship. It is limited to the relationship between Greek-language certification and naturalisation by years of residence under Form M127.

Before acting, reopen the official sources and check their update notices, attachments and application instructions. Government forms, accepted-evidence lists, examination arrangements and administrative procedures can change after an editorial guide is published.

FAQ — common questions

Can I naturalise with Ellinomatheia A2 only?

Not under the ordinary M127 route solely on the strength of A2, because that route generally requires B1 Greek evidence. A2 can be relevant to the differentiated route for eligible highly skilled employees, but only when all employment, company, residence and other conditions for that route are met.

Is B1 Ellinomatheia accepted for citizenship?

The official M127 framework recognises relevant B1 Greek certification, and Ellinomatheia through the KEG system is an established route for demonstrating Greek competence. Acceptance remains subject to the current documentary instructions and does not replace the other naturalisation requirements.

What is the Cyprus political and social reality exam?

It is a separate examination concerning the contemporary political and social reality of Cyprus. It is not part of Ellinomatheia, so applicants should check the official MoESY information and prepare for it independently from the Greek-language papers.

Does the high-skilled route apply to me?

It applies only when the applicant, employment relationship, qualifying company and residence history satisfy the current differentiated-route criteria. A professional-sounding job title or possession of A2 is not enough. Confirm the company category and obtain case-specific advice where necessary.

Are Greek school or university graduates exempt from the language certificate?

The M127 guidance provides for specified educational evidence in qualifying circumstances, but the exact institution, qualification, language of instruction and supporting documents matter. Read the current gov.cy wording rather than assuming that any course completed partly in Greek creates an exemption.
