Roadmap to Portuguese Citizenship
CIPLE A2 (or PLA) is the language gate between legal residency and citizenship. You need to pass it before submitting your citizenship application. Here's where it fits.

Most applicants reach Phase 2 after 3–5 years of residency. CIPLE A2 is the only gate between you and the passport — Prep2Go covers exactly this step.
Roadmap summary: Phase 1 — legal eligibility (residency permit). Phase 2 — A2 proficiency via CIPLE or PLA (55% pass). Phase 3 — citizenship application and approval.
Under Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2024, de 5 de março, the 5-year period is counted from the date you submit your initial residence permit application, not from its issuance. Check the official CAPLE website for current exam dates and registration deadlines.
What to Expect on Exam Day
The CIPLE A2 has 3 components.
1. Reading & Writing
1hr 30min • 45% of score
Read short texts (ads, messages, articles). Write 2 texts (25–35 words and 60–80 words). Word count matters — under or over means deduction.
2. Listening
30min • 30% — often the hardest
Audio over speakers — no headphones. Each recording usually played twice. Background noise is common.
3. Speaking
10–15min • 25% of score
Partner conversation with another candidate. Picture descriptions and role-play. Fluency matters more than perfection.
