Speaking politely
Use senhor / senhora and soft openers with people you don’t know well in Portugal.
The polite nouns
senhor (man), senhora (woman). Often with Bom dia / Boa tarde.

Trap: tu with everyone
Tu is for friends/peers. Formal default with adults you just met: o senhor / a senhora (not Brazilian everyday você).

- Não: Como estás? (to a stranger at the junta)

Como vai? / Como está? — safer than jumping straight to business.
