If you're planning to take the CIPLE A2 exam for Portuguese citizenship or residency in 2026, registration is the first practical hurdle — and it's trickier than it sounds.

Slots fill within days of opening. The website is in Portuguese. Payment has a 24-hour window. And if you're outside Portugal, your options are more limited than most guides suggest.

Here's everything you need to know, in the order you need to know it.

First: When Do 2026 Slots Open?

As of February 2026, the official exam dates for 2026 have not been published on the CAPLE website.

This is normal. CAPLE typically publishes exam dates at the end of the previous year or in early January. For 2025, dates became available in December 2024 — and at some centres, slots were full within hours of appearing.

What this means for you:

Monitor caple.letras.ulisboa.pt regularly from now. Check the "Exames" section for availability at your preferred centre. Each exam centre adds their dates separately, so you may see slots available at some locations but not others.

The typical exam schedule (subject to change each year):

  • February, March, April, June — Portugal only
  • May — Portugal and international centres
  • July — Portugal and international centres
  • November — Portugal and international centres (largest international session)
  • If you're outside Portugal, May, July, and November are usually your only options.

Before You Register: What You'll Need

Have these ready before starting the registration form. The process times out and you cannot save a draft:

  • Valid photo ID — passport or national identity card. Write down the exact document number you'll use. It must match exactly what you enter in the form and what you bring on exam day.
  • Email address — all CAPLE communication will arrive here, including your exam venue and results instructions.
  • Credit or debit card — the only payment method accepted internationally. If you're in Portugal, you can also pay via ATM reference or MBWay.
  • Your full name exactly as it appears on your ID — including accents, hyphens, and middle names if they appear on the document.
  • Step-by-Step Registration

Step 1: Go to the official CAPLE website

    URL: caple.letras.ulisboa.pt

There is only one official registration portal. Do not use third-party booking services — there are websites that charge fees to "help" you register when registration itself is straightforward and free (you only pay the exam fee).

    Step 2: Select the exam

Click "EXAMES" in the top navigation. Select CIPLE from the list of exams. Read the instructions on the page — they are in Portuguese but worth translating before proceeding.

Click "Inscrever-se no exame" (Register for the exam).

Step 3: Choose your country and exam centre

Select the country where you want to sit the exam. You can take the CIPLE at any CAPLE-authorised centre worldwide, regardless of where you live. This is important: if slots in your country are full, you can register at a centre in another country.

Useful alternatives if your local centre is full:

  • Candidates in the UK have used centres in Spain when Portuguese dates were unavailable
  • Candidates in the US have registered for European sessions when US slots (typically Newark, Washington DC) filled
  • Spain has multiple centres (Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia) with more frequent availability
  • After selecting the country, choose your preferred centre and exam date. If you see "esgotados" (sold out) next to a date, that session is full.

Step 4: Complete the registration form

    Fill in all fields carefully:

  • Name: Exactly as it appears on your ID
  • Document number: Exactly as it appears — including any leading zeros or letter prefixes
  • Email: Double-check for typos. All exam communication comes here
  • Date of birth, nationality, native language: Complete all fields
  • Read the exam regulations and the required declarations, then confirm you agree.

Click "CONTINUAR" to proceed to payment.

Step 5: Pay within 24 hours

This is the step where registrations most often fail.

After submitting the form, you are redirected to the payment page. You have 24 hours to complete payment. If you don't pay within 24 hours, your registration is cancelled and you must wait 48 hours before trying again.

The exam fee is €72–85. Payment is by card only for international candidates. Have your card ready before you start.

After payment, you'll receive a confirmation email with your candidate number. Save this — you'll need it to check your results after the exam.

Step 6: Confirmation and venue details

Registration is complete. CAPLE will send your specific exam venue and room assignment 7 to 10 days before the exam date. This email is in Portuguese. It will include the exact address, entry instructions, and your scheduled time for the speaking component (which may be on a different day from the written sections at some centres).

    Exam Fees by Country

CIPLE A2 exam fees vary significantly depending on where you register. Here's the current pricing (2026):

    CountryExam FeeCurrencyRegistration Fee
    Portugal€95-110EURIncluded
    Spain€180-210EURIncluded
    United Kingdom£85-95GBPIncluded
    France€120-140EURIncluded
    Germany€110-130EURIncluded
    USA$130-150USD$25 (additional)
    CanadaCAD $160-180CADIncluded
    BrazilR$ 450-550BRLIncluded

Portugal offers the most affordable option — approximately 30% cheaper than Spain and the UK. If you're flexible on location, registering through a Portuguese exam centre can save €50-100.

Payment methods: Most centres accept bank transfer, credit card, and PayPal. Payment is typically due within 7 days of registration to secure your exam slot. Some centres offer payment plans for multiple exam attempts.

Early bird discounts: A few centres (mainly in Portugal) offer 10-15% discounts if you register 8+ weeks in advance. Check with your chosen centre.

What to Bring on Exam Day

Arriving prepared ensures a smooth exam experience. Here's your essential checklist:

    Documents (mandatory):

  • Valid passport or national ID card (required for identity verification)
  • Exam confirmation email or printed admission ticket
  • Do not bring: expired documents, driving licences, or student IDs
  • Writing materials (provided by centre, but bring backup):

  • Black or blue ballpoint pen (bring 2-3 extras)
  • Pencil (for marking multiple-choice answers)
  • Eraser (for correcting pencil marks)
  • Personal items:

  • Water bottle (keep it sealed, place outside exam room)
  • Tissues (exam centres are sometimes cold)
  • Comfortable clothing (you'll sit for 4+ hours)
  • Wristwatch (no smartwatches — centres don't allow them)
  • What NOT to bring:

  • Mobile phone, smartwatch, or any electronic devices
  • Dictionaries, notes, or study materials
  • Headphones or earbuds
  • Bags larger than A4 size (store in lockers)
  • Food (water only during breaks)
  • Timing:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in
  • Exam starts promptly — late arrivals may not be admitted
  • Total duration: 4 hours 10 minutes (with breaks)
  • Bring a snack for after the exam — you'll be mentally exhausted
  • Pro tip: Visit the exam centre location 1-2 days before your exam to confirm the route and travel time. This reduces anxiety on exam day.

The Slot Problem: Why You Need to Act Fast

This cannot be overstated. The CIPLE has become significantly more popular in recent years as Portuguese citizenship applications have increased. The result is that popular sessions fill almost immediately after slots open.

    What test-takers report from 2024 and 2025:

  • At Faculdade de Letras in Lisbon, January dates were gone within hours of appearing
  • One candidate checked every day from December before slots appeared, then found most Portuguese centres full
  • By May in a recent year, the only slots still showing availability in Portugal were for November
  • CAPLE opened additional dates in 2025 when the original sessions sold out, but this is not guaranteed
  • The practical consequence: Do not wait until you feel ready to study before booking. Book a slot first, then plan your preparation around that date. If you fail, you can retake — but if you can't get a slot, you can't take the exam at all.

If All Slots Are Full: Your Options

    Option 1: Check other countries

CAPLE has approximately 100 test centres in 35 countries. Availability varies significantly by location. Countries with CAPLE centres include: Spain, France, Germany, UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Japan, and many others.

Check multiple countries. A centre in a neighbouring country is often worth the travel.

    Option 2: Watch for cancellations

Slots that were full sometimes reopen due to cancellations or additional sessions. Check the CAPLE website regularly, especially in the months before popular exam dates.

Option 3: The 150-hour course alternative

If you cannot get a CIPLE exam slot — or if the exam format isn't right for your situation — there is a legally equivalent alternative.

Completing a certified 150-hour Portuguese A1+A2 course (known as PLA — Português Língua de Acolhimento) earns you an A2 certificate that Portuguese immigration authorities accept in place of the CIPLE. This route is available through officially recognised providers, including some that operate entirely online.

This is not a workaround — it's explicitly provided for under Portuguese nationality law (Article 25, Decree-Law No. 237-A/2006). The 150-hour route takes longer than exam preparation (typically 3–5 months) but removes the slot problem entirely.

After Registration: What to Do Next

Once your slot is confirmed, work backwards from your exam date to plan your preparation:

  • 12+ weeks before: Start structured preparation — all four exam sections
  • 4–6 weeks before: Begin full mock tests under timed conditions
  • 1–2 weeks before: Focus on listening practice and writing technique
  • 2–3 days before: Review vocabulary, rest, do not cram
  • The most common mistake is underestimating the listening section. Unlike the reading and writing components, listening audio is played once only, over room speakers, with background noise included. Candidates who only practised with clean, replay-able audio are often caught off guard.
