Portugal a Top Destination for Expats in 2026
Portugal has been ranked 8th out of 31 countries in the InterNations Expat Insider 2026 survey. This global survey, which gathers insights from foreigners living abroad, highlights Portugal's appeal across several key areas.
Respondents particularly commended Portugal for its affordability, safety, and overall quality of life. A significant 78% of expats living in Portugal reported general satisfaction with their lives, surpassing the global average of 70%.
The country performed exceptionally well in specific categories, securing 4th place for personal finances and 7th place for ease of settling in. The cost of living was identified as a major strength, with 61% of expats rating it positively, significantly higher than the global average of 39%. Furthermore, three-quarters of those surveyed indicated that their disposable income is sufficient for a comfortable lifestyle.
Globally, Panama led the ranking for the third consecutive year, followed by Mexico and Thailand. Other top-10 countries included Spain (6th), Singapore (7th), Malaysia (9th), and Luxembourg (10th). The UAE and Brazil also featured in the top five.
